Potidea Canal

The Potidea Canal dates back to the 1st century AD. According to some sources it was built by Kassandros in 315 BC to link Toroneos Bay with Thermaic Gulf and provide naval passage between the two sides of the sea. At the same time a wall with towers at intervals was built along the canal to fortify the town of Kassandria which was built on the site of Ancient Potidea. Remnants of this wall are still visible. The canal took its final form between 1935 and 1937 and the bridge that spans over the canal was constructed in 1970. The canal is 1250 meters long and 45-meter-wide and serves small boats to sail from one side to the other. It divides the peninsula into two parts and has effectively turned Kassandra into an island. The canal is situated just before the village of Nea Potidea and is one of the area’s major attractions.
